Default Backing for binding...

A few weeks ago I asked if any had finished that way, and the positive comments prompted me to do it with 6 holiday tablerunners that I had pieced last year, then "stashed away". These were all scrappy braid-type with square in the middle and I found a good amount of holiday yardage in my stash that would work...so I loaded them onto the L/A, quick quilted, cut apart leaving that 1" turnover, grabbed glue stick and to the sewing machine I went. What a great way to finish these off! Half were mailed yesterday, others will be stocking stuffers, and I learned something "new". Thanks buddies!

I have done that before too. I normally use binding but in a pinch it works great

I would use this method for a table runner that doesn't get a lot of wear. From experience I would not use it on a quilt that gets a lot of wear.

We always used this method for quilts that were given to charity. I leave a little more fabric around the outside, fold it over at the correct length, and tuck the excess under the batt. That way there are two layers of fabric over the edge. These were almost always finish by machine, with a decorative stitch.

There is the same amount of fabric (2 layers) as a French fold, but rather than sewing it on additionally, the back fabric is cut 1" wider than quilt top, folded onto itself, then folded over from back to front and machine sewn down, as opposed to sewn to front, folded to back and hand sewn down. I actually have two whole cloth quilts from estate sales that are finished this way too. So, in reality the wear factor would be the same, I think....

I agree with Geri B. The binding is thicker and will wear longer.
