Default Bargello question, please.

Are the strips for a Bargello design always all the same width? I know the slices can vary, but I wonder if the strips could, too. Has anyone seen one?

Thanks!!

I think the strips would need to be the same size.

I think they need to be the same size too. Play with strips of paper and you'll see why

Kitsie, here's a book using different size strips: INSTANT BARGELLO By SUSAN KISRO SHOWCASE YOUR FAVORITE FABRICS QUILT BOOK. The designs aren't quite as impressive, but I think if the strips weren't cut quite so large it can be worked out. Let us know if you get one done!

Thanks, Evie. I think it could be done and will look up that book. Some color pieces could just be shorter or longer just like they can be narrower or wider. I think....

LOL, must be something wrong with the Amazon listing! Used is $9.97 and new is $68.58!!!!
Used would be fine!

And yes, I peeked inside and there is an example of one with various strip sizes. Thanks!

I don't think it will "flow", but I'm curious and would love to see a picture if you try it

Bargello Tapestry Quilts by Marilyn Doheny has the most complete description of the mechanics of tapestry quilts that I've seen. She refers to strips of different sizes as spacers and uses them effectively.

Sweetpeaches and others, here's "Evie's" book at Amazon. Look inside - I think it really depends on the look you want, but there is a beach quilt that uses different widths. If I were a designer, I would try a more basic (pattern, not picture type) design.

Great how you can ask a question on the board and with help, answer your own question!! Thanks all!

Thanks Dunster, unfortunately there is no "Look inside" for that one at Amazon.

My Bargello books all use the same strip widths. But I have not attempted to make one yet--it is on my to do list! But as in all "quilt-things" I don't think there is any reason you could not vary the strip widths if you can figure out how to make it work !
