Sure, why not? They put other things on roofs.

A measuring tape, (carpenters) chalk line, and pencil should be all he needs to make the pattern and then paint and a brush to paint it!

There is a gal at our LQS (Patched Works in Elm Grove, WI) who travels around Wisconsin looking for Quilts on Barns. She publishes a paperpieced (usually) pattern every Wednesday of a barn quilt. She's up to 23 with this week's post. The patterns can be reached through her blog at http://cre8tivequilter.blogspot.com/

Enjoy!

My DH would like the pattern (s) to make the ones that actually are the outside ones on the barns. Some are 8 feet by 8 feet!

TIA

Eleanor Burns has a book. I believe it is 'Quilt Block on American Barns'. It is on her website.

I don't know if colors in barn quilts have meanings like hex signs do, but I suggest researching it before putting it up. We got a really cool hex sign for our back porch because of the colors, it just blended well with what we had . Then we had a baby, one more, both 'planned' Then we got an 'oops' baby and shortly after saw the back of the hex sign. Seems the green, the major color in it, is a sign of fertility! For a year we had 3 kids under 3

But I did just get a wonderful idea:
Our son, the oops, is in the Navy and lives at an apartment house in San Diego. I joked with him that he should take some duct tape and put "HI MOM" on the roof of his car so when I looked for it on Google Earth, it would show up. Now I'm thinking a quilt block would be more fitting! (We have seen his car on Google Earth)

My DH has decided he is going to make one for the front of our home. We live in town but we have a two story house and one BIG space on the front. He is going to do it in America. Then put "IN GOD WE TRUST" on it.
