I have found that prices are higher in the following counties: England, Scotland,France, Belgium, Germany, Austria.
Less expensive in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay. It is worth purchasing patterns though, in all countries, since you will not find them at home. Although I am a sewist/quilter, I purchased cross stitch patterns that were very pretty. I did pay the extra for some fabrics, just because they were of high quality and not available in the States. If you are going to buy lots of yardage, open a FedEx account and ship back home the slowest mail....it maybe less expensive than paying airline fees and lugging it around through airports.

Oh lucky you! I know nothing about where to find the shops but hope you'll report back to us when you return. Switzerland is one of those places I've always wanted to visit and probably never will. Have a great time; I'm sure your son and his partner will cherish the quilt!

I go to Italy every summer to visit my family, my first outing is to the fabric store, in all trips all I ever found was quilting fabric from the US at an exorbitant price. If you want to find local fabric, a fabric store may carry cottons but usually it is too heavy to use in a quilt, I do like all the doodas however, ribbons and bottons, trims and especially beads. Have fun!
