Default Batik question.

I have never worked with Batiks before and I'm somewhat puzzled. The fabric I bought seems to have brighter color on what I would assume to be the back of the fabric as it is to the inside of the fold on the bolt. Is this usual?

I have been working with Batiks and find its impossible to know which is the right side. I just guess.

I usually cannot tell the difference so if one side is a little different I use whichever side I like the best. Sometimes the "wrong" side is a little more blurry.

I love using batiks! I just choose a side based on which I like best!

Same here. Sometimes you can tell one side is darker but most of the times I just start sewing any side :-) love Batiks

I've found that not all fabric is folded with the right side out. But as others have said, choose a side you like and go with it.

My theory is that since you paid for both sides of the fabric, you get to choose which one you like best.

I agree. Use which side you like better. That is what I do. That is what I like about batik cuts down on oops's because there is no real correct side to the fabric. Just dive in and go with it. You will have a blast.

Just a little info on batiks,

Most fabrics you buy from the LQS or other places are screen printed or some other method of printing. This is why you have a definitive right side and wrong side of the fabric.

Batiks are dyed fabric, not printed, they sometimes have wax placed on them in designs, then dipped in a dye bath. This is why there is no right or wrong side of a batik hard to dye only one side,

With that being said, sometimes the dye's adhered better on one side or another, sometimes there was excess treatment on one side rather than the other, so it is possible to have different looks to either side.
