I have the opportunity to take a class at my LQS My question is; is it worth it to do this, it will cost total including materials approx 200.00 This is a stretch for me as I do not work, and my wonderful DH has told me to just do it. I am currently quilting my first quilt , its a quillow and honestly it looks like i was nipping the bottle while quilting , my lines are not straight. I have not even attempted binding yet, I should also tell you I didn't even know how to sew, My wonderful bff who is extremely talented is helping me learn. Just looking for some feedback , I need to let them know by Saturday, and I'm sure i would enjoy the class but this small voice inside me says thats alot of fabric monies LOL thanks for any input

Lots of what you need to improve is practice. I found a local quilting group when I first started. They were great help in the learning process, and dues were only $24 for the year. Sometimes churches have groups too. I know how you feel about spending that much on classes, but sometimes it is worth it just to splurge on yourself... I am sure that you do not do that often enough..Also remember you should have a completed quilt at the end...

I can see why you would hesitate to spend $200.00 on a class. I think you may find what you need from a less costly source. Join a guild , or other quilting type group. Or find a class, that has the specific components of what you think you need. I know I often teach skills one on one , for little to no money.
I would find out how many people are going to be in the class , somtimes too many people in a class does not allow for the one on one you might be needing.

I think you could find a beginner class for a lot less money. I know of several shops around here that offer classes for $20 - $50. You buy your own fabric.

$200 seems a little high but since that amount includes the materials for the class I think you should take the class. When I first started I took a class that was about $60 and we supplied our own materials. I made a king size quilt so if you add the cost of a king size quilt to $60 you are close to $200. That was about 10 years ago and prices are up from that long ago. You should find out from your LQS what the class will be teaching. I would not be able to make the quilts that I can make today without that class and some others along the way. The classes teach us things that it takes often takes lots of mistakes to learn on our own. So, I say go for it!!

check out and see if your town or another close by has a junior college that offers quilting classes as a non-credit course. ours does. you bring your own fabric of course and the cost is very minimal. when you sign up for it, you will be given the information about yardage you'll need. and there's not that many to a class usually.

For $200, it really depends on the length of the class and what all will be supplied.
My 6 week beginner course runs about $180 so for a LQS who is probably sharing the money with the teacher/s $200 is about right for a class that is 6-8 weeks!

I would carefully check out what the class entails. The projects may not be to your liking or the items covered are not what you need. Like others said practice is what you need first. Just being able to sew a straight line is the number one thing even with a quarter foot.

I wouldn't recommend paying that; but I didn't like my experience at the LQS. Didn't pay alot; but you brought whatever project you wanted to work on, they would help when needed....but would have to wait for the teacher to get done with the one before you. Better off saving your money and letting your friend help you and buying a good beginner book.
It would be of tremendous help if you would just slow down and practice running your machine before trying to do quilt. There may even be opportunity for you to take a class through your local adult ed and at a much cheaper price.

That seems a bit expensive. If it is a series of classes though it might be worth it.

I alway recommend beginning quilters take a class. They teach you the basics that are sometimes difficult to learn on your own. You also get to meet other quilters and it is a lot of fun.
