    Question Bernina 1031 Quilter's Edition

Just received a Bernina 1031 along with many accessories. Not sure if I should have it serviced and sell it or trade it in for something new. I have a Brother sewing machine that I've been using for years so I'm not sure I want to make the switch to a new machine just yet. Is there a market for older Bernina machines?

For some models of Bernina's there's a very lucrative market. I don't know about the 1031. You might want to check on eBay and see what they are actually selling for.

This one sold for parts for $140.00 on eBay

I have a Bernina 1530 and a 1020 and I wouldn't trade them in for any other machine.

I believe the 1031 is one of the last "mechanical" machines made by Bernina and is highly prized. You may not be finding many on eBay because they are highly desirable. It should have quite a reasonable dollar value if you decide to sell it.

I have a 1260 that is 21 years old and it sews anything and everything smoothly and quietly. I've bought several top of the line models by other companies and nothing - NOTHING - compares to my 21 year old Bernina. I would keep it.

That's a great machine! I traded my 1030 for a newer Bernina 230 several years ago, just just to get a blanket stitch for applique. You'll know if it needs a service if you look in the take-up lever, and there's a thread tangle. There were a few Berninas in that series that had a bad light switch. So when they come through the shop, we routinely by-pass the switch, so the light comes on when you turn the machine on. Other than that, they're pretty awesome!

One sold on ebay in May for $500 + shipping.

If it's in good condition, I wouldn't even consider getting rid of it. Taken care of, it'll stitch beautifully and last for many, many years.

Virtually all my sewing is done on my 1031 Bernie and I adore her!! I also have and use her older brother the vintage 830 and baby sister the vintage 807. Best machines ever in my opinion!
