I do more like a ladder stitch. I don't press the fold in my binding before. I find it easier to travel when the fold is not sharply creased. The same when I do a blind stitch in just catching a few threads.

I travel in the fold. It is easier if you do not press the binding before attaching it. Then the fold is easier to get into and folds over nicer without that press in it. Just my way. Can't see the stitches at all.
