I most often hand stitch the back down BUT I have done some where I sew the binding from the back, pull it to the front and use a decorative stitch, sew it from the front by machine.

For good quilts, I machine stitch the binding to the front, turn it to the back and hand stitch it down. For charity quilts where they will get a lot of washing and hanadling, I machine stitch the binding to the back, bring it to the front and use a decorative stitch to sew it down. It holds better that way. I love to do the hand stitching as it is so relaxing and doesn't take much brain power.

ditto this. I used to hand sew to finish but my bum shoulder hurts too much so I do all mine by machine using the zig zag stitch - it looks nice and catches both sides nicely.

    Me too.

my 'blind hem stitch' is sometimes very seeable to the eyes. so I've learned to sew to the back and bring to the front and use a decorative stitch to finish. hand sewing is soooo NOT relaxing to me, but a great source of aggravation instead.

The only machine binding that I have found that I really like, is posted on this board. The title on the tutorial is "Quick Machine Binding With Flange". It was posted by Charismah. I have used it and I really like how it looks.

Sometimes I machine stitch the binding on the back and then use invisible thread to stitch it to the front. It's great for small, art pieces like wall hangings and table runners. Don't know how it would hold up on a bed quilt that gets s lot of love.

I HAVE DONE BOTH BUT RECENTLY I HAVE STARTED SEWING DOUBLE FOLD BINDING TO THE BACK AND TURING AND USING A FANCY STITCH ON THE FRONT. IT GIVES THE QUILT AN EXTRA DESIGN. MUCH FASTER AND EASIER THAN HAND STITCHING. SOME HAND STITCHING MAY BE REQUIRED ON CORNERS

I hand sew the binding in the back, but a friend does a fancy zigzag stitch that I may try some time.
