what width do you cut your strips to get a nice binding and what seam allowence to you use to attach it to the quilt? I have been trying different widths and the one that works best for me is 3 inches, sewing it on with a 1/2 inch seam. When I fold it over the remaining inch just covers the stitching. How does this work with a 2 1/2 inch strip? Or another width. Does the binding end up the same amount on the front and back or is one side wider? Thank you so much. I have a lot to learn but I'm learning every day.

I use 2.5 inch wide strips, most of the time it covers. But have had some close calls. It depends on how thick a piece you are binding. On some of my potholders, it was a close call. Maybe you could do a test piece before you do the whole binding.

I use 3 inch strips and sew with a 3/8 inch seam. Seems to work for me.

I also cut 2 and a half strips and use a quarter inch seam. My batting is warm and natural. It always covers and makes perfect mitered corners. Maybe your batting is thicker? Sometimes I go down to 2 and a quarter inch strips on a tablerunner. I think that you can just use whatever works best and looks most pleasing to you.

I've been using 2 1/2, but I'm going to 3 or 3 1/2 on my next quilt with straight edges (my next one is scalloped, so it will need to be narrow). The quilt that hangs near my right hand has a finished 5/8" binding and I like it a lot.

I cut 2 1/4" strips and sew them on with a 1/4" seam allowance.

I use 2.75 inch strips, sew it on with a 1/4 inch seam. When I trim the quilt after the binding is sewn, I trim 1.5 " from the sewing line so that when I hand sew the binding down, it is full. I use the ladder stitch to hand sew it to the back.

I cut my binding 2.5 and sew it on with a 3/8ths seam allowance. That works well with Hobbs 80/20 batting. The quilt I'm working on now has really thin batting so I'll probably cut the binding 2.25.
