I bought some yardage that is a wine theme, drinks, not color! The predominant colors are black, gold, some green, red, and purple. I cut the fabric into 5" squares ( four different patterns) and plan to put them into blocks, maybe a nine patch. I was thinking of making the sashing black but don't want to over power it with black.

Does black sashing over power quilts?

I almost always like black sashing. I've even used it with bright and white blocks.

Take your 5 inch blocks to the fabric store and lay them out on the fabric you have in mind. Then stand back and take a look. You could also compare with other colors. Sometimes I lay them out side by side for a better comparison. For me it's the only way.

I think black would look fine, quiltsRfun idea is really a good one!!!

If the blocks are fairly bright, the black will really make them pop. If the colours are softer, the black will make for a darker top. Dark tops are nice too so try them out by laying the blocks on black fabric and see how you like it. Even take a picture and look at it that way.

I'm a big fan of black sashing. Alternately, you could use a lighter colour for the sashing and black posts.

If you lay the blocks out and it looks too dark, you could maybe add gold or some other lighter neutral color as cornerstones to lighten the look.
