Several years ago I happened upon a sale on the really nice thick fleece that isn't all stretchy for $3/yd. I bought several bolts in various colors. I'm now needing to find a sale like that again since I use fleece as combination backing/batting for most of my quilts.

I have purchased whole bolts from Fabric4Less.com. You have to register with their site to see the prices, but the prices are very low and registration is free.

I often buy a bolt of a white, grey, or black. My LQS gives you 25cents off per yard if you buy the entire bolt. So I go through their fabrics looking for bolts with just 7 or 8 yards left on them to use as quilt backing.

Marshall's Dry Goods! Best prices... and great customer service. My wholesale salesman there is named Grey. He is wonderful to work with, just call and ask for him.

Try their "Dream Cotton" for solids. It's basically the same thing as Kona Bella Solids-- even made at the same factory.

I like solid color backings for my quilts. When Hancock Fabrics has a 50% off coupon, I buy the whole roll of 120" wide Sheeting fabric. I find it to be a consistently good quality. Even though I am not very good on my long arm, the effect of having a solid color back with the quilting done with a thread that shows up a lot, makes all my quilts reversible. I do always match the back to some color on the front. The wide sheeting comes in black, white, beige and tan. At 9 dollars a yard for 118"-120" wide, the fabric is quite a bargain.

There are some great suggestions and resources on this topic for buying fabric by the bolt. Thanks for posting the question.

I use to buy wholesale from P&B Fabrics and Hoffman for my backings when I was professionally quilting for others. I don't think there is any place where you can get a break on a bolt unless you know a shop owner who may give you a 10 to 25% discount on the whole bolt.

I've boughten wide as well as 44" muslin by the bolt as I sometimes use it to make my sample dress patterns when working with a new pattern. Want to make sure it fits before I dive into the good fabrics. Also have used the wide muslin for a backing if its the good quality stuff. Have a project coming up where I wanted to make a bed skirt and valances to go with the quilt so bought everything they had in the store and then had them order another bolt of the same fabric. I'm sure that was over kill but rather be safe than sorry. I know if you finish off a bolt you sometimes will get a discount

I buy Kona Snow by the bolt at Joanns when I get 50percent off. Hobby Lobby always has 40 percent off and Hancock's has 50 percent off with a coupon.

Two of my quilting friends and I go to Marshall's Dry Goods often. We buy fabric on the bolt and it's usually 15 yard per bolt. We buy from three to five bolts each. We each get 5 yards. It's usually $2.98 a yard on the bolt. I buy some bolts for myself like blenders and neutrals. There are racks and racks of bolts to choose from. All the name brand fabric except Moda. The rep told me they are in talks to Moda. All you have to do is get a rep to ring you up, the bolt price is separate from the per yard cut price at the front of the store.
