The rule I learned, way back in the day, was that it's visually pleasing to have your borders be a multiple of your block size. So if your block is 12 inches, then that suggests that a 6 inch, or 4 or 3 or 2 or a combo of those would look good, whereas a 10 inch block you go with a 2 or a 5. If I'm ever stumped for what to do for a border, and for some odd reason feel the need to border a quilt, I think of that guideline, and may or may not follow it.
The only reason I can think of for mandating wide border is that it gives you space to quilt a more elaborate pattern, if that's the look you're going for.

rules?? didn't know there were rules when chosing a back I asked anyone and everyone in the store if they quilt. One brave lady said yes and suggested I not follow the directions! My first wonky quilt is beautiful - and I DIDN'T follow the rules! phooey on them.....

I decide what size I need the quilt to be, figure out how many blocks needed depending on their size and then determine what size the border will be. Sometimes I'll need more or less blocks to get to the right size or look that I want. It doesn't get much more complicated than that for me :)

Sometimes it depends on how much of the fabric you have that you want to use for the border...Make it the way YOU want it. The border police can go find someone who believes this kind of stuff. There are NO rules about the width of the border or even if there has to be a border! Quilt on!
