Ha!! Science teacher here, too! well, retired... and my main focus was Biology... but taught a lot of Physical Science next door to the Physics lab...

I did this to a old singer cabinet, you need to change that shelf to a thick plywood 3/4 '' and better bracing , I see cut outs in the back of cabinet, if you can get to the very back of that cabinet put a brace across the back I put mine on the inside , you could put on the very back A solid back is better support for the cabinet.
