I bought a little rachet offset screwdriver at the local hardware store. It comes with both flathead and phillips bits. It allows you to get some leverage on the item.

I always use the tool that came with my machine. The head is thicker and wider to fit right into this screw. First time was the hardest after that things move smoothly. Just be sure to tighten things tight when replacing needle of foot.

I used pliers to get the needle out the first time. I also used them with the screw driver that came with the machine. Worked well for me.
