I say, why not?
Buttons can make for some interesting additions to a quilt top.


Two considerations ....
.... is it for a child? the buttons would need to be secure, so a child could not get them off, and swallow. Or perhaps be scratched, if sharp edges.
.... quilting! Depending on how you will be quilting, and the placement of the buttons, you may be best to leave them off, until after all assembly and quilting are completed.

I put buttons on a quilt for my DD (adult) a few years ago and there have been no problems with them. I added the buttons as the very last step of making the quilt, after binding. She used it on her bed and it has been washed many times. She got a black lab puppy two years ago, who now sleeps in her bed so she has the quilt folded on the back of a chair. Didn't want to take any chances or have to wash it so frequently as you have to with a fur baby.

Anyway, I say go for the buttons!

Just be sure that you quilt before you add the buttons--hitting one while quilting (DSM or long arm) may knock it out of timing.

I would not add buttons unless it is for a wall hanging. It just seems like it would catch on things and little hands might want to snag them lose and maybe swallow one? Just thinking of the worst.

There are buttons on my row-by-row also. They just need to be sewed on vs glued on. I guess that is a no brainier but it popped into my brain so just thought I would mention it. Hopefully I can work on mine yet this weekend and get it done. Be sure to post yours when finished - would love to see it. Mine will just be a wall hanger.

I also made a fish quilt and used buttons for eyes- no problems

I made a quilt from a kit. It had large prairie points around the center. I sewed buttons on the points to keep them down. After washing and drying the quilt the points were all messed up. They worked very well.

I like the look of the buttons but I have very long hair and they have proven quite painful when only a few hairs wrap around a button. i ended up removing the buttons on one my MIL made for our couch. I gave her the buttons to use on another quilt. I think they cost her more than the fabric.
