Buy as much as possible even if you don't know what you're going to do with it.....ideas will always come later :!:

That is the never-ending question. If you really like it, buy at least three yards.

In my experience, if I find one that I have no plans for, I usally buy 2-3 yards, this depends on how well I like the fabric!

If I find a fabric I like, I keep it in mind. I figure out a project to make, then figure the amount I need. Then, I go back and buy it. (If it's not there, I probably didn't need another project started anyway.)
If you take take down the information, it can usually be found online somewhere or be reordered from the quilt shop.
Maybe this is why my stash only consists of two filing cabinet drawers. mmmmm????

I count the number of ladies that come into the shop and buy a half yd or 1 yd of fabric and then call me later to see if I still have it. Sometimes I do, but more often than not, I don't.

The 1 to 3 yds rule seems sensiable, if you can afford it, and with most of my fabric being $4.50yd, most can.

I buy as much as I can afford. If it is something that absolutely calls out to me I go beserk. I found one this norning and bought ten yards for $2.99 a yard and can't wait to get my hands on it.

I used to buy only what I needed for a particular quilt. Then I found out that I ran out of my fabric before I ran out of blocks. I carried a swatch of that material around for 5 years, trying every quilt store I went into, looking online, etc. Finally one day, my daughter said "Look on eBay". Whadda ya know, I found it on about page 6, my exact fabric, and just exactly the amount I needed to finish my quilt! Glory be!.
Lesson learned, I always buy more than I think I'll need. I can always find a place for the left overs (another quilt, a swap, another crafter or quilter) and now I never have to wait another 5 years to finish my quilt.
