I would do a scrappy quilt using 3 inch blocks or 3 1/2 inch . I made one using 16 squares to make a block. I liked the way it came out. Have fun putting it together. You will surprise yourself as what you can come up with.

I just saw Jenny Doan's tutorial on YouTube for Big Star quilt. If you could cut 10" sq it's a super fast & large block . She showed some done scrappy too

I wouldn't separate anything. This box screams crazy quilt to me. The more textures the better. Have you some decorative stitches on your machine? You can make use of those as well. An old worn light colored sheet works great as the foundation or some thin Muslim. Maybe you have some thin fabric in your box you can use. Google crazy quilts and the patterns are endless. I've made 2 and they were some of the most fun quilts I have ever made.

I second the string quilt idea. God bless you for wanting to do something sweet for your Mom. It will be a great joy to her to for the rest of her life!

those scrappy quilts pictures are a great idea. You could even alternate a solid block with the stripped block.

My Mother was not really a quilter, but she left me with a top made from fabrics she and I had worn. All were satin, rayon, silk? Not what is usually mixed. I finished it. (That's what started me quilting) and my daughter has it tossed over an old trunk that had belonged to her Father's step dad. Usable as a bed cover? No. But very precious to my precious girl.

I like the suggestions above, but wanted to share that my grandma used to collect scraps from our clothing and she made hap-hazard Dresden plates. No two were the same, but all had the same color circle in the center. I inherited some of these years ago (I am 79) and appliqued them onto unbleached muslin and sashed it with a "30s" green. Everyone who sees it thinks it is great.... a "vintage" memory quilt as we pick out fabrics we made our clothing from. Hope you come up with something fun and a great quilt. Blessings, Roberta

This is a great idea. But I am not sure that how much warm it is. Fabric use for quilt must be warm. There are many different types of woolen fabric available in market. Also a large no of blankets available.
