Thanks everyone for the help. I'm going to wash the flannel. Use poly batting. Quilt it (not tie). Then wash again. It's a baby quilt so 'scrunching' is a good thing - I think it will make a nice affect.

you can mix many many fabrics in a quilt- just pre-wash everything and make sure everything can be cared for the same...flannel is used alot -- after all it is 100% cotton and a wonderful quilting fabric.
and mixing fabrics gives a quilt movement and texture and simply adds to the beauty.

If you really want "scrunching", use a primarily cotton batting so everything shrinks a little together. It is the batting that delivers the crinkling effect, and poly batting does not do that.
