I've been double siding my quilts seems like forever. This is my blooming 9 patch and the reverse side.
On the other hand I've never made a t-shirt quilt so don't know what works best with them.

I've pieced many of my backs to use up the scrap or leftover blocks. Makes it look like 2 quilts in one sometimes.

I almost always piece my back. I think it adds a bit of interest. I may add an extra block from the front, maybe use a bunch of small pieces to do a piano strip in the middle, maybe make a strip of flying geese with the scraps and add it diagonally, etc. One that I really liked was when I had several larger pieces from the front and I used them as 4 large blocks to create the back - simple yet very nice.

In our guild when we do show and tell, it always seems like a pieced back receives "extra credit." People are impressed with the creativity.

My only suggestion about pieced backs is to always be cognizant of the challenge in "lining up" the front and back layers evenly. Seams can appear wonky if the back is at a slight angle. I like to put the majority of the creative piecing in or near the center with bigger pieces around them, so if things are a little "off", it is not noticeable.

Concerning backs in general, I avoid stripes and plaids (at least on the outsides), because it is always a challenge to have things come out evenly on the edges.

I don't worry about the seams when I piece a back - my machine will quilt multiple layers, but like Daylesewblessed, I do try to make sure both sides are lined up straight. I did have some concern with one as I was doing some outlining of appliqued flowers on the 'front'. Finally decided the 'back' could have some stitched flowers and got it done. Either my daughter hasn't noticed or she likes it. I liked it.

    Kalamaquilts, Your quilt is lovely.

I try to find a whole piece of fabric for my donated quilts. They are about 42x57" . By the time I get to sandwiching I just want to get it done.

The only suggestion I have as a longarm quilter is, don't do it if your top is all pieced batiks that have not been washed. I am struggling through one right now. I work over an hour just to get one row...with thread shredding. No shredding on regular fabric but this one has batik on both sides...

Yes. Other people's rules don't apply when you are making a quilt.

here's a quilt that has a pieced back. I think you will enjoy it.
