I have read that using powdered detergent can also cause pilling. Don't know for sure though because I only use liquid detergent.

I have made about 40 raggy flannel quilts. I have a steam cycle on my dryer so I the put the fabric through that before putting it in the washer and then in the dryer again. After constructing the quilt i run the quilt through the dryer cycle first and then the washer and then the dryer again. This seems to cut down on the pilling for me.
