No reason why you can't learn to use a treadle. I learned on electric but prefer to use the treadle for most things now that I have the hang of it. You will need to turn the hand wheel toward you slightly on a red eye when you feel the motion of the treadle under your feet just go with the flow.

I learned how to sew on a treadle when I was 12 years old; some of the machines in "Home Economics" were treadles but most were electric. I loved the treadles and we all had to be able to sew on all the machines. Musical machines, I guess...

Thank you so much ,,,, I think I had my feet placed incorrectly... I practiced 30 mins....then, I left machine open and will practice your way tomorrow... plans are to sit down each day I have time and practice. Really is fun.... maybe I will even sew with needle and thread at some point. Will practice bobbin filling later. lol

thanks, Judy

To first start, give the hand wheel a spin in the direction you want to sew to get the foot rhythm started. You rest your dominant foot on the back corner and the toe of the opposite foot at the front of the shelf. Once you get her going it only needs a gentle push to keep going.
My Singer treadle has the little rubber wheel on the right hand side of the machine that tips towards the hand wheel to fill the shuttle bobbins. You put the long bobbin into the brass things and thread the thread from the spool, down the hook area and hold it with the fingers when you start to fill the bobbin. The rubber wheel thingy tips towards the hand wheel to fill the bobbin, you loosen the silver knob on the hand wheel so the the needle doesn't go up and down while you fill the bobbin. When the bobbin is full, tip the rubber thingy away from the hand wheel and retighten the silver knob to activate the needle again. If you don't have this on your machine. Nevermind!

There is a gadget you can buy from Joann's to wind bobbins. Sorry, I'm way too tired to find a link for you. Perhaps someone has already mentioned it, or you can probably Google "Bobbin winder".

I think you can learn to sew on the treadle! I learned to sew on a treadle in 6th grade and then last year got one. It all came back after over 50 years of not using one. All the other suggestions are right on target - once you get going you will see how fun and easy it is.

I think it is called the Side Winder... I am fascinated by treadle machines, never used one, but it seems like fun and a good way to use up some extra calories!
