went on the central coast one 2 years ago Hwy 1 and 101 in California, could see the ocean most of the way, only eleven shops from Carpenteria to MORRO Bay and two were inland a bit into wine country :) it was delightful but sad now that some of these shops are closed.

The Southern California Quilt Run is 40+/- shops and is from LANCASTER to the border and in the mountains and down to the ocean (and Palm Springs) it is like an endurance trial. but with two cars one for wives and one for husbands playing golf and good hotel reservations it can be a wild two weekends in a row.

I seriously considered trying it, thought it might be fun, but at the current cost of gas, and the size of Texas, I calculated that I could just buy the prize cheaper in the long run. Think they also have similar online shop hops as well.
While on vacation a few weeks ago, I stopped in Kerrville, live in Houston and you have your "passport" stamped at the quilt shop. Texas is divided into "regions" so you only have to visit the shops listed. That is only shop I went to as my LQS did not participate this year. But anyways, while at the shop in Kerrville that first Saturday the ideas were swirling, the fabric/patterns flew to my fingertips, met some wonderful ladies, had a blast and pocketbook lighter! I want to do it again....
Can you be 'qualified' for the prize drawings if you only visit one shop? Thought the requirement was to visit at least 4 shops in each region in Texas?
A shop hop tour bus (I think it is a Quilt Across Texas tour) leaves tomorrow from an area store for a two or three day trip to quilt shops and will go to about 20 L QSs within at 200-250 mile radius. Texas is so much bigger than people from out of state who have never been here think, that it is hard for them to imagine that you can't just run down to Houston from El Paso in a couple of hours or drive from Amarillo to Brownsville in a half day. The rhyme goes, "The sun has riz, the sun has set and here we is in Texas yet." I suspect you would have a month to six weeks of hard driving to shop in every quilt shop in Texas no matter how well you planned and you would have to have a ton of money to spend in the quilt shops. AS for visiting 4 shops in each region of Texas, that isn't very likely either unless you live in a kind of "four corners" area. froggyintexas

I went to my first one this year in WA. It was a blast each shop gave out a pattern and the material to begin a block desingned by that store. If you went to each store you would have the beginning of a whole quilt. Of course it encouraged you to buy the fabric to finish the block (your choice) lots of prizes and a grand prize drawing after 16 store stamps on your passport. It was well organized and well run.

Shop hops are how I got sucked in! Love them! Usually we have two big ones a year; central NY shop hop and western NY shop hop! Usually each shop will have a snack and drink and something quilting related as a gift for coming. I've gotten the following; small cutting mat (6" x 6"), fabric grips, gloves with non-skid spots all over them, four pieces of fabric that measure 2 1/2" x 44", fat eighth's rolled around an emery board...to name a few! Sometimes the shops all give 3-4 pieces of fabric strips so when you've completed the entire shop hop, and handed in your passport, you'll also get a pattern that will complete the top with all the materials you received!

Jan in VA, you must be so proud to have helped create what has now become a much anticipated Quilting event across the entire nation! That is such an awesome story! So glad you shared with us! :)

Hi orangeroom! I live in the same area you do and wondered when there are shop hops in our locale. I'm new to quilting and so this is a whole undiscovered subject for me. I even wonder where most of the LQSs are located, having only found 3 so far. I've also been considering joining a guild in the hope of learning more and enjoying the company of other quilters. Could you share a few insights and information on those things?

You can see an example of the process for an upcoming shop hop at quiltersquest.org. Each shop has a different setting for the quilt blocks. All of last year's options are in the gallery, and a few for this year are also shown.
