Default Cheapest online stores for fabric??

    Hi there,

I am completely new to quilting and also this site, so wondered if anybody has any suggestions as to where I could purchase some relatively cheap materials online? I have heard they are quite expensive in store, so if you could share your fav online stores that would be fab

    Thanks!

My goto online store is Connecting Threads. They have great quality for the price. Prices generally run from $5-6/yard for the basics, with batiks running a couple dollars more. They also have great sales on fabric and 30% off of batting several times a year. Free shipping with orders of $50 or more.

Marshall's Dry Goods and FabricShack are good as well (especially for sales). I've also had good luck with Fabric.com.

www.thousandsofbolts.com is also a good source of cheaper fabric that is good quality.

But, from your original post you said, "I have heard they are quite expensive in store", which leads me to think that you haven't bought much fabric. If I were in your shoes, I'd head to the nearest 3 or 4 stores with fabric and check out various fabrics and learn something about fabric before starting to order it.

I have found many new favorites from the Quiltshops.com site. If you find some you like, you can sign up for email notifications of sales. Most have sale or clearance sections too. That said, here are my favorites and my first few choices when looking for great quality fabric at decent prices:

    Thousands of Bolts - http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/index.cfm

    Quilt Fabric Closeouts - http://www.quiltfabriccloseouts.com/

    Stitch-n-Frame - http://www.stitch-n-frame.net/

    Over the Rainbow - http://www.overrainbow.com/

    Bali Batiks - http://www.balibatiks.com/

One thing to keep in mind when shopping is that there are many stores now that price their fabric by the 1/2 yard. Also, they do vary from store to store on what the minimum size cut is and shipping can vary greatly. Most places will ship flat rate priority mail, but some go by total price of the order. Just be sure to read carefully before you order.

One of my best discoveries has been Fabric Outlet on Facebook. She runs sales each weekday and her prices can't be beat! She ships really fast and her selection is fantastic! Check it out!

I like Quilt Fabric Closeouts and Pink Chalk fabrics. Also, I've found great deals by typing "cotton fabric remnants" into the search slot of eBay and Etsy. Recently got a fabulous bargain on some Asian fabric remnants that were sized like fat quarters. Just $2.36 and $2.50 shipping for the lot.
