With the fabric you have you could do some 1/4 and 1/2 log cabins that would give a floating effect.

Lots of more complex things you could do, but I think the checkerboard you mentioned would be very nice too, if you don't want to put monumental work into it. I'd use red and some of the black on white print.

I'm thinking of something like "icing on the cake" idea. like a scallop border.

Are you going to stick with the red, black and white theme? For some reason when I saw the picture, blue popped into my head. Adding another color?????

For next border, I was thinking square within a square, using the checkered fabric for the on-point squares & the red fabric for the triangles that surround to make the outer square.
