They make fabric markers and fabric crayons. We used them for a church ministry quilting project with children from a local school. They work great, but must be "set" with an iron. I love the soft look of fabric crayons!

I just did some research on those, and they look GREAT! I use the Fabrico markers, but these are much cheaper. I wouldn't use anything but either of these, though- especially with a white background. There are many more colors with the fabrico markers.

I teach classes on color tinting and embroidery. You can use Crayola crayons and color them as dark and vivid as the actual crayon color. Just keep adding layers and press with a paper towel between attempts. One of my students did a Halloween project where the colors were extremely vivid--true orange, black, gold.

I tried sharpies on a scrap piece. Didn't work good. Spread out of the pencil line. I bought paint markers made for fabric. Works GREAT. Stays in place, bright colors. GD and I traces flowers using light pencil then colored them in. Did a great job and washed nicely.

Sharpies definitely bleed! My DS's Disney Cruise signature pillowcase was ruined when I finally washed it. He didn't care, but it was so pretty before. I quickly chain stitched over the names so they can fade away now.
