Lesson learned..
My DH bought me a Brother PE 780D Embroidery Machine for Christmas...so we went to our local LQS to get a few starter items. Then about 5 days later we went to Joann's and bought many more items. I bought 24 different colors of big spools of Sulky Thread. What a waste..it is horrible in my machine. It keeps breaking the upper thread and leaves such a mess on the bottom side, so I thought maybe there was a machine issue. So I went to Wal-Mart and bought a spool of Coats and Clarke brand..no issues.. I then tried Mandeira.. no issues.. so I tried Sulky again..and issues again. Now I am hoping Joann's will do a return on all that thread. How can thread be so different??? The Sulky seems to shred.. rather then just break.

Take it back, Joanns should have no problems taking the return. Do you still have the receipt?? I don't know too much about thread. I am a new quilter, but have found that my Janome does not like Coats and Clark. Mandeira and Gutterman seem to be her thread of choice.

I don't use a lot of Sulky threads but I have purchased some if they were the right color when I was doing an applique. I find them tricky to work with because the ones I got were made out of Rayon. I found it quite slippery. When I sew with it, I make sure I have a new needle and slow my speed down. I have a Janome and I use Coats and Clark and have never had an issue whether I am sewing a garment or quilting.
I would definately take them back to Joann's. There shouldn't be any reason why they wouldn't take it back.

It's most likely a needle issue. You probably aren't using the right needle for a specialty thread.

I have never had any trouble with sulky, but that doesn't mean there may be something wrong with that batch of thread.
If joanns won't take your thread back, I would contact sulky, they have always been fair with me.one other thing
I use a large eyed needle.
