Default Copyright question

I know there has been other threads about copyrights and read through them but still confused and would welcome advice. I got a free pattern from Avlyn Fabrics back in 2009 and finally finished the quilt. Someone asked me for the pattern and long story short it appears that Avlyn Fabrics is no longer in business and there is no longer a website. I know the pattern was copyrighted but there is no designer name on pattern. Since the pattern was free on their website can I share or give to someone else?

You can give the pattern to someone else, you can sell it to them, or you can loan it to them. You're just not supposed to make copies.

It is legal as long as you don't make copies to share or sale, this goes for any pattern old or new.

I got a big ding for trying to share a pattern that was free when published, and the designer has already passed. According to Quilting Nan, that was illegal.

as long as "share' doesn't involve making copies it's legal.
as advised above, it's legal to lend, sell, or give the original pattern.

Many designers put rules on their patterns. A rule is not a law but it's printed right next to the copyright. I don't follow rules for a pattern I bought.
