Hello, all!

Craftsy is offering a free color theory BOM. It's the first Craftsy thing I've done. In addition to being free, I'm under the impression I can participate when it suits me (I've recently gone back to college, a new semester begins next week, and I haven't yet figured out how to sew without feeling guilty that I should be studying - hopefully it won't take me four years to learn to juggle the two!).

Anyway, when I signed up there was an offer to buy the kit for the BOM. I said no to the kit, but am wondering if I'll regret it. Has anyone done the Craftsy BOMs and used their own fabric? Is there any advantage, other than the obvious convenience, to purchasing their fabrics?

If it was me, I would definitely try applying what I am learning to my own stash. Buying a kit kind of negates the point of learning color theory.

I agree with DebraK. And the classes are recorded, not live, so you can certainly participate whenever you want.

I have done a number of Craftsy classes that offered a kit and used my own fabric. They came out just fine, the other nice thing is you can view your classes on your schedule and not miss anything. You can also review something as many times as it takes to get it.

I've done a lot of craftsy classes and never bought kits. I agree that it would be especially good on a color theory class to pick your own fabrics. I have enjoyed all the classes. Most of the teachers are good, some are very good. I especially like Cindy Needham and Ann Peterson and Angela Waters. I am into free motion quilting and they all have good classes on that.

I just signed up for this class because I have absolutely no sense when it comes to choosing colors for my quilt projects. I didn't purchase the kit because I have a stash that's way too big and need to learn to use it. What is the sense of buying fabric in colors that already go together if they're supposed to be teaching you how to do it?

I have learnt so much on utube and here..I was on craftsy and it seams like they are taking so many free patterns that have been posted on sites...and many are also starting to climb in price as well as many classes...I really hope that they do not ruin it for all of the folks out here learning things that we would not normally even try that it use to cost so much in the past to take classes. I really think people are starting to come back doing crafts thanks to people sharing their hobbies. As many of us do this for fun and the materials alone cost a lot.

My other thought is...that one of the reasons why I bought my 7700 is they had free classes on their sight so I was able to learn how to use it before I took the plunge...vs some of the other brands that you had to buy it first...when we are shown things first it is a great way to encourage people to buy the product and use it....and upgrade. Just saying...

and Jenny Dolan...she is awesome...I even bought fabric from them and will again...so those who share we do not forget...I hope companies don't forget that...

The last two years they had free BOMs that lasted all year. It brought a lot of people to their site and a lot of those people purchased their classes. This year they are offering small BOMs. I need to take the color theory class because I can't pick out fabric that matches without help from the people at the LQS. I do think it's funny they are offering a kit with this color theory class. I need to go through my fabrics and try and figure out which fabrics go together, not which ones they chose already. Ha ha. That's why I buy kits -- because I can't figure out color myself. I hope this class teaches me something about picking out fabrics that go together. I would be thrilled if it did!

I think the craftsy classes have made me a better quilter. I always go for the free classes. The 2012 class helped me with Piecing and keeping my seams straight. I learned new block styles with 2013 and now I can learn color. I have incorporated what I have learned so far into other projects, and the best part is I can access them whenever I want forever. I am a big fan.
