I did not use batting and the quilt turned out very soft and warm. Made it a lot easier to handle not to have to deal with an additional layer.

I use a lightweight cotton fabric as the batting. The tops are pieced with flannel and I was worried that quilting stitches might break from tugging/stretching as the toddlers use these quilts. My thought was that the woven fabric for batting would add a bit of stability. So far, these well used baby quilts have all held up after years (7 or 8) of use.

I have used Minky and fleece as backing without batting and it was fine. When quilts are for very small children I try not to make them too heavy.

I used minky for backing on a flannel quilt I made for my husband. It has no batting, but is plenty warm and not too heavy.

From the many responses and that this 7 month old grandson lives in Key West...I think I’ll skip the batting. Thank you quilters for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

Is Cuddle the same thing as Minky? What do you think of the Joann Minky equivalents? Is one heavier than the other?
I've made quilts for my grandkids with Minky and no batting--they're not as soft feeling as I would like, but the kids say that they are their warmest quilts.
