I have a pieced top that is 42"X48" The fabric for the backing is 2 yards and is 42" wide. How do I cut this . The quilt store said that this was enough for the backing and the binding but I don't think so. Can anyone help me with this please?

Yes, but with a little help. You will need 5 strips of 2.5" for binding, that uses up 12.5 inches. The backing needs to be 2" larger on each side for shifting, etc, unless it is going to a long-arm then you may need more. So you need a 46 x 52 piece for the back. You start with 2 yards = 72", cut off the binding, you have aprox 59.5 left. Cut a 42 x 52 " piece, you have about 9.5" left witch means you have a 42 x 7.5" left. You can then add an extra block or two to that to get to the 52" you need and then sew that onto the 42 x 52 piece. and you will have approx 49 x 52 " back. Your extra piece of "somthing" will need to be approx 10"in length to be able to make up the extra space. See Barnbum's back from yesterday to see what I mean, sort of. Hope this helps

Or you could use a different fabric for binding, something contrasting maybe and use that other 12.5" piece to make the back all one color.

this is great help. Now, I've found contrasting binding material. So do I first cut a piece 52X42 (the width of the material) Then I have a 20X 42 piece left Do I cut this into strips that will equal 52 X7 ?

Ye, I would cut that strip down to 2 pieces of 10x42, then you can either cut 2 pieces of 10 x 26 and join them together to get your width, with the seam in the middle of the small piece or just cut a 10 inch piece off of one and join to the other and then sew to the larger piece. Make sure you remove selveges from the edge you are sewing on to!
