i've been making wall sized and smaller portable design boards for my miniatures and blocks for years. i just use felt glued to cardboard ..will try foam board for next wall sized one. some heavy carsboard can be difficult to stick pins into. yes they cling to the felt w/o pins ..unless they attract feline attention or doggy sweep passes nearby

Another good option is corroplast .... relatively solid, pin-stickable, lightweight, thin ...
.... and can be tucked easily behind or under a piece of furniture.

I just used duct tape to attach it to the back, then I nailed it to the wall. I've had to move it once and it still looks ok.

I prefer felt to flannel. It's thicker, not as stretchy, it comes in various widths, and it's very cheap.

I use an old fleecy-type mattress pad. Blocks stick to it fairly well; sometimes I need to use a pin or 2 per block.

I also used an inexpensive batting that I got on sale at Joann’s...wrapped around 4x8 insulation foam boards (cut to fit my wall) and my blocks stick fine.

I used a flannel sheet that had been washed a few times. (We decided we didn't like it on the bed.) The blocks kept falling off. So I gave it a quick spray with Spray Adhesive. That worked wonderfully. It needs replenishing in a few days as the adhesive really gets dry.

I used flannel also and it really works well to hold the blocks
