a tote is very very easy. I made one for my dd and myself. just cut a rectangle and then cut two sides. sewed the two sides together, much like a sleeve then attached them to the bottom. my trouble was the corners. I would recomend a heavy fabric for a tote bag. much like a canvis type. holds up very well.

I have a 17 year old girl. The theme right now seems to be BRIGHT! There is a fabric at Wal-mart called Crazy Daisy. It as the name indicates is big bright colored daisies. She used this to make curtains for her room.

Peace signs, hearts, and smiley faces seem to go over well as long as they are BRIGHT.

I'm sure she will appreciated whatever you send her. She must be hurting and knowing someone cares is always good at times like that.

My 13 year old dgd loves zebra prints and picked those out for a quilt trimmed in hot pink. If you look around you will notice lots of zebra print things in catalogs, etc. I think my high school students would like that, too, and they love all kinds of tote bags so that is a great idea. :thumbup:

My 15 year old likes the old hippy stuff. Peace signs, big daisies, fringe, etc. I do know at 14 no Barbie or princess stuff. Also name brands are very important for girls at the mid teens. Pink and Aerie stores have the colors and designs that are very popular for girls. Coach purses for teens have great graphic designs they love.

Stick with a tote, it will be appreciated more than a pillowcase. She would look at that as " what am I suppose to think or do about this thing?" And no pretty pastles or tiny flowers. Even my 8 year old GD is past that one, and the 20 year old stopped liking those at 12.

I would definately use fringe or something fuzzy to bling it up.

When you are ready for a quilt for her (and her brothers) check out the pre-cuts from Moda. I wish they had them when I was a beginner. The fabrics are gorgeous, and if you buy charm packs or layer cakes, they go together like magic- just sew the squares together, easy peasy.

The quilt I am making last minute for a graduation present is made out of jelly roll strips, and it's also EASY.

Go to ModaBakeshop.com and scroll through. Some are complex, but there are tons of easy things to make, and they are all beautiful.
