Do I paper piece this? Is there a pattern?

While the one you have shown is very pretty, it is a traditional mariner's compass. Can you sneak us a picture of her tatoo?

This is the thread for a black and white and bright block exchange - you might get some ideas if you scroll through the whole thing.

I would PP the star behind the butterfly. The butterflies are perfect. The star should be something that will not take away from that butterfly. I love the rest of the quilt also. Nice job in planning. What a good friend you are. Keep us posted as to your final decisions etc.

It's definitely an 8-pointed star.
Do you think she might be interested in co-designing this with you?

This is a very common star and you should not have a hard time finding a pattern. I suggest going to the library and checking out a book on Mariner's compass. All the instructions you could ever want would be right there for you.
