Do you cry when you gift a quilt?

Sometimes. I do cry. My sister in law asked me to make 3 tee shirt quilts from her husbands tee shirts after he passed away....one for each one of their 3 boys. I added embroidery and looked for special fabrics to make each quilt personal. I shipped the quilts to her. with in a week I had 3 tearful phone calls from each of my nephews....all in their 40's...to thank me for their quilt. They loved their dad and they treasure those quilts. Three years later when my sister in law passed away, the 'boys' asked me to make 3 more quilts with their mom's tee shirts. Again, I got 3 more tearful phone calls. That is why I quilt...to give someone joy and comfort with a hand made gift.

I haven't cried over a quilt, but my heart has hurt. Several quilts I have made were so dear to me and I so loved them myself that I found it difficult to give them away. I knew deep in my heart they needed to leave my hands and I so wanted to keep them. But, truthfully, after they were gone, I did not miss them. To me, that was a simple sign that I did the right thing by passing them on to someone else.

The only quilt I cried over, was the pall quilt I made for myself. When my brother died unexpectedly, we placed it on his casket. At the end of the visitation, I covered him with it. He looked so at peace wrapped in my (now his) quilt, then I cried for hours.

I am always crying. I finally asked the shrink why and the answer was this. You are an emotional person with your emotions very close to the surface. I cry at the National Anthem, American Flags, parades, all funerals, all weddings, you name it. It's just me. Please just let me cry. Marcia

Thankfully, I've only been moved to make one recovery quilt, for my dear cousin still recovering from head injury sustained snowboarding BC(before Corona). Very upsetting, but I don't cry at sad movies.
The other gifts were at baby showers or weddings or other excited recipients.

I gave my (still) favorite ever quilt I made to a beloved aunt for Christmas. She loved it and knew I did too. She later told me that she had instructed her son to give it back to me when she died. I got it back a couple of weeks ago. Don’t know if letting it go or getting it back was harder...
