I FMQ on both a Bernina and a little singer portable. Both do a very nice job. Any machine can FMQ if it can have the feed dogs lowered or covered and can sew with a darning foot. I have even covered feed dogs with tape to covert to FM. If your machine makes a good stitch, it can be done.
peace

I didn't think I could FMQ until everyone here told me I could learn (practice, practice, practice!). My 33 year old Kenmore didn't know it could FMQ until I told it that the pile of UFO's would continue to grow unless it could. Now thankfully my UFO's are under control, and my family will not have a 5 year wait for a quilt! Don't give up, you can do it.

I finish my own quilts and have been limited to straigh-line stitching on my Baby Lock. However, I am a lucky girl because I just got a Handi Quilter Sweet 16 sit-down machine and that is just the bomb.

one thing to watch for is throat space. my Janome only gives me six inches. What I would give for nine. then i could wrestle the quilt through the throat easier!

I do straight line quilting on my Singer 401A (it has a walking foot) and FMQing on my vintage '70's Bernina Record 830 (it has a darning foot). I also hand quilt if the quilt calls for it. I have never paid someone else to do it...I'm too cheap! Would rather buy more fabric.

I FMQ on my Bernina without a stitch regulator. My machine cannot take that additional stitch regulator. I have fun with it and things turn out well and I am gaining practice. Bernina's are the best machines for piecing and work fine for FMQ, I have heard that Janome is good forFMQ I know there are some machines out their with longer throat plates, I haven't used them but a longer throat plate can be nice. I have done queen size quilts on my Bernina and don't plan on buying a new machine in the near future.

I use my embroidery machine to do the quilting with digitized quilting designs.
