 If you can effort it, go for it....
Its not necessary but it can help you a lot especially if you decide to make the quilting by yourself ....: so just before you make your binding: serge all the corners.....You will love your serger....
And yes..its very helpful with many other projects.... (I have the Brother 1034D serger which wasn't too expensive and works great for me...
    Good luck

I just recently was given an Elna serger by a couple as a donation for my class. It's probably 8 or so years old, never been used, never even plugged it in.

The wife quilts and the husband went to a sewing store to get her a gift and was sucked in by the salesman's pitch "every sewer has to have one of these", so he bought it. His wife was very appreciative but, aside from at least taking it out of the box, never touched it.

I oiled it up, plugged it in, and it works beautifully but I never use it for quilting, just sewing.

By the way, they were both 77 when he bought the serger, how sweet is that!

Got one with my Bernina 930 in 1985. Still have them both and wouldn't part with either. Threading has never been a problem with the serger because I just pull thread through (lazy way). You'd have to fight me to take it away from me. And yes, I use it a lot.
