I've quilted many quilts with flannel backing. They quilt up nicely. Most of my customers have used the regular quilting fabric for the binding. These are very cuddly!

I have made a very large number of flannel backed baby quilts. I much prefer them, as do the charities I give them to. However, flannel binding would wear out too quickly. Since I make a lot of charity quilts for kids (22 this year, one with a non-flannel back), I buy flannel when I find it on sale. Recently I have found that good quality flannel sheets are rather cheap per yard if you are planning to make several in the future. The best flannel I got was from my LQS.
