My guild received upholstery samples from a local furniture store several years back. We made bags to give to a local women's shelter. Many of the women turn up at the shelter with their few belongings packed in plastic garbage bags. It turns out that many furniture stores will be happy to donate their outdated samples to nonprofit groups.

Years ago I inherited a sample book of drapery fabric samples. I went throught book and removed the 100% cotton pieces, then cut them into charms. I've made a quilt with the charms paired with a beige lightweight denim. It was very beautiful (and heavy).

Someone is always donating fabric like this to our guild, upholstery and drapery fabrics and double knits. We spend a day every two months making thick pads for the local animal shelter from the fabrics. We just sew pieces together and sew more on top of those until we have a thick layer. We don't wash them, no one wants to make quilt for anyone with them.
