LUCKY YOU! I have never had the opportunity to take any of her classes, but I have just started her "Feathered Goose" pattern...the first of hers I've ever done, although I have done A LOT of paper piecing.

I like that she provides templates for all the pieces - sure saves on fabric, and makes the process go smoother. I did NOT precut ALL the pieces (as she suggests),because I am doing it all with batik scraps. If this one turns out good, I might consider purchasing GLACIER STAR pattern.

Have fun and please post your progress - and thoughts on the whole process.

I'm in the middle of working on my Glacier Star quilt. Our LQS hosted a retreat with one of the certified instructors. It was fast paced - we did the last weekend in March, went through 5 of the techniques, got sent home with our "homework" and we go back on April 29th for the weekend to learn the last technique and to finish up. It is just awesome how those pieces come together so perfectly. You'll love it. I have to say, putting all of that into one weekend felt more like "Quilting Boot-Camp" rather than a quilting retreat - but the results are SO
rewarding! Enjoy!!!

The Glacier Star is a great pattern by Judy Niemeyer and is only available at Judy Niemeyer Certified shops.* Eileen Urbanek, our fabulous certified instructor from the Desert Sky workshop, will be ours for the retreat! What a deal!!!

We have already filled 21 spots for this retreat ... so think about it and act quickly!

Here are the details:

The retreat starts Thursday, July 7 at 12 noon and ends on Sunday, July 10 at 2pm.

Class: Glacier Star. There are six techniques to this class, and yes, we will be covering them at a fast pace. This class is only taught by Judy Niemeyer Certified Instructors of at Judy Niemeyer Certified Shops.*

* Pattern: Glacier Star Pattern is $60 and can only be purchased at a "Certified Shop" or thru a "Certified Instructor". The Compass Centre is NOT a certified shop, you will be required to purchase the pattern thru Eileen and the cost of the pattern WILL be included in your retreat.

Kits: Glacier Star Kits will be OFFERED for your convenience; however, they are not required, as some of you prefer to shop from your stash.

Kits will be approximately $150 and will be offered in several colorways. You will be able to select your colorway in advance of the class. (We are expecting a really big shipment of batiks in April, May and June, so kits will not be assembled until the majority of the fabrics arrive).

Should you choose to bring your own fabric, you will need to come prepared to use what you bring, as there will not be any time at the retreat for Eileen or Melissa to help you "shop for fabric", as we will be starting on the techniques right away. So, if you want to shop, contact Melissa to come at a time previous to the Glacier Star Retreat.

So… the cost:

Retreat $228.90
Instructor and Pattern: $95.00
Total: $323.90

Optional Kit $150 + tax = $160.13

Total INCLUDING Kit: $484.03

Please respond ASAP to hold your place to: [email protected]

A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required to hold your place. You MAY transfer the deposit to another quilter should you be unable to attend. MAKE DEPOSIT PAYABLE TO THE COMPASS CENTRE AND MAIL TO P. O. BOX 10, MT. CALM, TX 76673-0010

I'm sure you have additional questions, so please feel free to contact me.

This is going to be a GREAT class!!!

I made the Mariner's Star and will say she had the process down very very well. I did practice paper piecing first though -- alot.....

And I would say that MS was an "easier" pattern. I felt the hardest part was that the blocks interlocked, so I had to play with the final layout a bit to get all my colors right.

I didn't buy a fabric kit, but chose my own.

I am attaching a pic before it was layered and quilted... I think the finished pic must be on my laptoP!

personally I would highly recommend her patterns!

I have made one of her quilts and enjoyed it very much, it was fairly difficult but it went together beautifully.

This one is called Japanese Fans

I have done several of hers. I was extremely pleased until I did the Bali Wedding Star. Not so happy with that one. There was so much going on the paper piecing of the sections together was nasty.

Examples of issues. She says you need 10 1/2 yards for backing and binding for a 106 by 118 quilt. That cuts your LA very tight and doesnt allow anything for shrinkage or for salvages or for a crooked cut off of the bolt. Luckily I bought extra.

She never gives you the finished block size so when my paper warped I had no idea how big my finished block was supposesd to be. Realize each block has about 100 pieces each so the paper just did not hold that she had it printed on....it literally came apart in my hands. I ended up photocopying it onto tear away.

Another place, the instructions were not good with the curved piecing. I cut a bunch of stuff according to the directions and it was just not working for me and I have made four curved pieced quilts with no problems. I WOULD NOT EVER precut again with one of her patterns.

I have done one in the Garden Series, it was fine. I did Autumn splendor and that was fine. I did Cactus something and that was fine. I have Rain Drops in my to do stash.

They are beautiful and I am thinking about the Glacier Star but after the problems with this Bali Star I need a break.

Your JN quilt is drop-dead gorgeous! WOW..Thanks so much for your comments and the picture....

I have never paper pieced in my life so thought I would jump right off the deep end straight into 'A Garden for My Wedding Rings' on the principle of 'learn from the best.' I do plan on doing a table runner as practice before getting started on the real McCoy and see how that goes. I just ordered the pattern a few days ago and have been reading up on Double Wedding Rings--especially Eleanor Burn's version from her book "Egg Money Quilts." Number 3 son just announced his engagement, the first of the 3 to move in that direction. I am over the moon, hence the ambitious undertaking. Not a lot of time as he says they will be married "within the year."
