I have birds, 2 macaws and a conure = I use scraps and anything around like empty spools to make toys for them. Braiding scraps and trimmings with spools added in keeps them amused until they destroy it. If any are still usable I add them to the next toy along with leather and wood scraps.

As soon as mine are empty, I look for a cat to toss it to. Once a year, we pull all cat 'toys' out from under everything, toss them out, and start over on a new bunch the next year.

Use them for a special "card" for a loved one. I made some for valentines day but will be making some for birthdays also, or if you have bunches of them, cover with fabric and string to hang in a doorway for a "spool" door.

Oh I am so glad that someone else has the same question. I am saving them in a bag, can't bring myself to throw them away. My Mom was a bride of the depression. Maybe we could string them on a wire and hang them in the garden to discourage the birds from picking at the berries. Maybe spray them with the plastic paint and string them for mobiles to hang on the porch.
