I got kicked out of Home Ec. Told the teacher my mother did it better.

I do use patterns, but only as road maps. I have books on changing things and drafting software. If whatever garment one of the family wants doesn't have a pattern, I buy a basic and hit the software for the changes.

I actually caught some nasties from a designer when I mentioned in a forum that I took out the dratted shoulder pads.
She designed it EXPLICITLY with the pads and was incensed that anyone would think differently. I'm not selling the changes, I'm only doing them for MY family which is legal.

Same with quilting. I will work out changes in a pattern with Electric Quilt and do it my way.

Congrats on mastering a new skill. Isn't it wonderful that we have the freedom to "do our own thing" without someone breathing over our shoulder and prohibiting or forbidding or criticizing our methods.

Happy for you! I never took Home Ec, but I think it would've benefitted me if I could have. I love quilting.

I flunked Home Ec., because the teacher didn't believe I could do the work. I did explain to her that my family business was in the garment industry ...... family owned and ran a garment factory ..... I was taught at a young age to use the industrial sewing machines (with lots of supervision ) and felt that the home sewing machines used at school were toys compared to what I normally used. She didn't like that I not only used the industrial straight stitch but also used a serger for my seams and a blind hem machine for my hem, as well as the button hole & button machines.
