    I would always wash flannel before using in any part of a quilt. It is known to shrink. So get the shrinkage out of the way before you begin. A half yard should be more than enough.

    I've also noticed that with some flannels (like at Joanne's) the 'width of fabric' is smaller than what a typical quilting fabric is. I like the idea of buying an extra yard!
