I usually use muslin for quilt backing unless it's a "special" quilt and I'm happy with that. Now I'm wondering if I can use plain flannel instead of more expensive batting. I'm thinking this combination would be more managable in the sewing machine than the sometimes bulky poly/cotton. Wouldn't the flannel be just a cuddly as the other battings?
I love this site and use it as my favorite learning tool, though sometimes I think you're being too kind while trying to save the feelings of fellow quilters. I value your honest opinions and reasonings.
    Thanks.

using flannel instead of batting seems to add more warmth to quilts- i don't know why. i've used flannel for batting many times. i never use muslin for backs though- i always choose a print...solids are so...unforgiving- every stitch shows-

I just made a quilt with cuddle fabric (kinda like minky) for backing and had to put something in the middle because the front has white in it. I used flannel with the white side up so that nothing showed through the white pieces in the front. It was not hard and seems quite warm so I'd highly recommend it. I would not however, recommend piecing the cuddle fabric for backing again - a solid piece would have worked much better!!!
