I've just finished a couple of baby quilts with flannel backs (the tops are regular quilting cottons) and can't find any suitable binding fabric in my stash. Is there any reason why I shouldn't use flannel for the bindings? Does anybody do this? I already prewashed it twice to make sure I wouldn't have excess shrinkage.

I have used flannel for the binding on most of the flannel quilts. I find they hold up well, even with frequent washing. I tend to use a wider seam allowance - up to 1/2 inch.

Thanks for the tip about the wider seam allowance. I will go ahead and use it.

Ditto on the go ahead, and wider seam allowance, plus I use a wider than most binding anyway, I usually cut my bindings at 3" wide.

I just did one last year and it worked fine other than I still am not a fan of flannel, too much pet hair in my household.

I have used flannel several times for the binding on a flannel quilt, so I say go for it. As mentioned above, I do use a wider binding, 3" just as Iceblossom mentioned.

Babies and children love soft edges - I often bind with flannel when I’ve used flannel for a quilt. I make most of my kids quilts with flannel

I use flannel to bind often and quilts I made years ago when the children were babies are still around today after many washings and lots of “dragging around”.
