I was a newbie quilter when I bought them at an estate sale. But, I might do it again. There was so much fabric there, and it was so cheap, that I might do it again. I bought a full size Dresden plate quilt kit with everything already cut out for $5.00. I've given away a bunch of what I bought to charity quilters, but when I saw that pattern, I decided to use those fat quarters for it. I want to try that free motion quilting pattern. (The photo in the magazine is much larger and detail is better.)

Thanks, everyone for your help.

With flannel, yes, I would wash it all. Do small cuts like FQ and 10" squares in a lingerie bag before washing to keep them from twisting and fraying. I've been known to safety pin them together before putting in the lingerie bag, as well. Another option is to hand wash them.

When I wash the smaller cuts, I turn them loose in the dryer. Tumbling keeps them apart.

As an aside, all those plaids would make a wonderful "man cave" quilt!

I dry quilting cotton cut pieces in the dryer, but not flannel. It just has a tendency to fray too much.

I just made this giant flying geese quilt with flannel. I used a layer cake for the scrappy colors and yardage for the solid looking one in each block. I washed the yardage and didn't wash the layer cake. After it was quilted and washed I didn't notice any shrinkage problems. The only pre cuts I ever wash are fat quarters and have never had problems with different shrinkages.

I would make the quilt and then wash it,also add vinegar to the wash to help set the color.
