I prefer to use a lighter thread, a #40 or 50 weight is my first choice. Also, with a variegated, depending upon how often the color scheme repeats (i.e. changes every 2 in vs every 6 inches) and the quilting design, you sometimes start to get a thread color pattern that may be unintended. I suggest you make up some practice pieces and try out the King Tut and another, lighter thread to see what you like best. Don't forget to make sure that you use the correct size needle, too

Get plenty of practice done with a few different weight threads to find which you and your machine like. Practice on scraps . If you decide on a specific size you can join them to make an aid memoir, I do 21" half width of fabric squared.

I think there is nothing nicer to quilt with than the King Tut thread which is 40/3. I usually use a 50/3 or sometimes 50/2 (Aurifil) in the bobbin. I never have problems with standard tension settings. I use a Bernina B530 or Bernina 1130 to quilt with. I use it almost exclusively for quilting that I want to emphasize. I might use a 50 weight if I want the quilting in the background to recede. But, do, test it on scraps on which you have drawn the pattern you plan to use. It is amazing the difference the color and weight of thread make.
