which foot?

Hi, I'm new to quilting and was wondering which feet would you say are helpful and which ones are 'can't do without' ones? I've had a look on a few websites and it is all a bit confusing! Thanks for your help.

Wow, what quick responses, I think I might be popping on here pretty regularly when I get started! I have a brother sewing machine. I had a look on ebay and the walking feet seem to vary from £6 to £30. Are the cheap ones as good as the more expensive ones or do you get what you pay for?

I can't live without either 1/4" foot that has the little metal guide or the older style "patchwork" foot that has a little tick mark at the 1/4" on each side.
I also use my walking foot for putting on binding and stitch in the ditch.
I use my open toe applique foot for machine applique, paper piecing & zig zags.
I haven't used my darning foot since I got my mid-arm but if you plan to FMQ, you will need it or a hopping needle.

Not sure what machine you have, but the walking foot is my can't do without. I leave it on one of my machines at all time. The 1/4 inch foot is very nice, but I can put s barrier up to help keep the width. And if you plan to do the free motion quilting then the darning foot (open) is necessary.
So it really depends on what you plan to do.
You need to make sure the walking foot is one that goes to your machine. Mine cost about $25.00 in US which was for a Singer machine. The Brother appears to cost more.
