I've been quilting my behind off trying to finish quilting DD's quilt before the fabric for my customer quilt comes, so I don't feel like I have to put DD's aside to work on that one. This is my first FMQ project...I think it went ok. It wasn't until I was almost done that I finally figured out what I need to do to keep my tension in check...set the machine as fast as it will go and just gooooo with the flooooow. The last few blocks have GREAT tension! LOL I can't believe how much thread I went through, though! Two full spools, I lost count of how many bobbins, but at least 8-10. I don't have any pictures right now, but I'll have some soon...I just want to get the binding done, which leads to my question...

I'm binding it in satin. I know I need to pin and pin and pin and pin some more. I want it to be fairly wide, so I'm going to trim the backing so that it is two inches beyond the top (backed in minkee, no batting). Can you starch satin? I've never bound with it before...but I know it's gonna be a pain. LOL I'm thinking I'll need to starch heavily for it to behave a little bit...but I don't know if I can do that!? lol

I'm thinking that I'll fold it so that the raw edges fold into the center, then wrap it around the edges of the quilt, super pin it in place and use a decorative stitch to sew the front and back down at the same time...is that do-able?

Any other tips for binding with satin?

Use a stitch that puts as little pressure on the satin as possible. I use a serpentine - not a high pressure one and the snaking back and forth catches the back better. It really isn't much of a problem except for the corners. Pin them well and if you have to put in a few hand stitches afterwards to make them look good, oh, well.

If you can lower the pressure on the presser foot, then I'd try it. That may be my only complaint on my Elna. The presser foot is self adjusting - not always.

I've bound quilts with satin for babies - they seem to love rubbing their little fingers on those edges as they get beyond the newborn stage. But, I guess I cheat - buy the precut satin blanket binding found at JoAnn's or WalMart, piece them together to get the length I need. Good luck with whatever method you decide.

The only reason I'm using yardage is because I bought the satin a long time ago, specifically to make a blanket for DD before I started actually quilting. Then I started quilting, and never made that blanket...so I want to use it for her quilt. lol
