Re the Barn Quilts:
Another forum I belong to had a gentleman recreating traditional Quilt block barn patterns in wood. I think he was selling them for outdoor use, but the patterns for most of these blocks are public domain.

If you look closely, a lot of these are actually traditional blocks. There should be free patterns for most on the net.

One of the quilts is close to traditional
I have an app for Android that has most of these and makes 6 - 12 inch blocks.
Another place to find patterns is stained glass. These can be appliqued. I remember having a cross stitch book of them.
The Distelfink, tulip and other like them might be better appliqued. Find a picture and scan it to the size you want, or have a place like Office Depot do it for you.
